Best Buy. "This Cabernet Sauvignon adds a bit of Petite Sirah and Malbec to the mix. The result is an overall well-balanced red that offers approachable layers of complexity. Find notes of black currant, black plum, boysenberry jam, clove, nutmeg, coriander, black licorice and just a hint of barnyard."

"This brawny, old-school wine offers potent aromas of tobacco, black olives and wood smoke followed by black-cherry and black-currant flavors that are nicely concentrated. Fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity give it great structure for drinking through at least 2025."

"Supple, fleshy, substantial. The Hess family emblem is the lion, which adorns each bottle of Hess wine. The company was established by Swiss businessman and art collector Donald Hess, who also owns wineries in other parts of the world.
A consistently pleasing and forward wine the 2018 does not disappoint. Preserved cherries and cassis aromas are woven with chocolate, pipe tobacco, vanilla liqueur, sweet brown spices and wet earth. The palate has a liqueur-like quality as well, a plush weight, generous sweet fruit and cola spice flavours stand out. It has good freshness to balance all the volume and a long tobacco-laced finish."

"Proof positive that even sub-$30 Cabernets from California overdeliver on quality. Hess Select’s 2018 North Coast is working with high quality, perfectly ripe grapes that show in the glass. Cherry and cassis with lots of oak quality to soften the tannins and bring a little breathing room for the fruit and acids to let the palate do what it does best, makes you hungry for a good steak or roast. A great bottle to have on hand."

Anthony Gismondi, Vancouver Sun, Jul/2022

"The North Coast is sometimes described as a relatively mild Mediterranean climate intermingled with well-drained volcanic and gravelly soils. The year 2018 was ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, as promised by the rich black fruit. Look for plums and blackberries with a savoury undercurrent. Anything off the barbecue will work here as this wine ages into 2025."

Natalie MacLean, Apr/2022

"Hess Select 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and rich with plum compote, violets, dark chocolate, savoury herb, smoky vanilla and spicy toasty oak flavours on the palate. Tannins are smooth and there is good acidity for food. Pair with a steak and sauteed wild mushroom dinner."

"Supple, fleshy, approachable. Licorice and minty aromas. It's a fleshy wine with flavours of spiced cocoa, purple berries, vanilla; supple and smooth it has good length. Approachable, international and perfect for spicy BBQ."

2016 -

"Supple, sweet, approachable. Cherries and leather, red currents and tealeaf aromas are layered with savoury spices. It shows inordinately sweet fruit in the mouth with a supple weight. Approachable, international and perfect for spicy BBQ."

"Very attractive fruit flavors fill up this medium- to full-bodied wine while a smooth, supple texture makes it easy on the palate. The ripe plum and blackberry notes are delicious, and complementary notes of oak spice and dried herbs add complexity."

Editor's Choice "This plushly textured and luxuriously ripe wine has soothing baking spice aromas, soft plum and blackberry syrup flavors and a medium body. Moderate tannins boosted by 11% Petite Sirah are well integrated and make for a velvety mouthfeel."

Natalie McLean, Mar/2019

2015 -

"Hess Collection 2015 is smooth, soft, rounded and ready to drink now. This North Coast, California Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and blended with 11% Petit Sirah giving it an earthy, ripe dark plum and mocha nose with more plushy plum, dark fruit, sweet cake spice and savoury herbs on the palate with a sweetly dark chocolate and velvety finish. Pair with gourmet burgers from the grill."

"Mocha, plush, woven. Plump and boisterous with chocolaty flavours wrapped in cassis, fresh plummy notes, baking spices, tobacco and leather. A similarly chocolaty palate is also juicy and well-woven with seamless integration of flavours. Stylish overall, a fresh yet plush offering."

"Sweet chocolate notes and black plums on the nose and palate of this full-bodied smooth Californian red wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes."

Gismondi on Wine, Nov/2017

2014 -

"As you might expect, this Cali cab is ripe and rich and full bodied, though here there is some interest ingrained via the blend being flushed out with 10 percent petite sirah, 6 percent malbec and 3 percent merlot. A full oak treatment (French and American oak for 15 months) has given the rich black fruit the heavy cloak of vanilla, black forest cherry, mocha and peppercorn spicing right up through the heated finish. There is a powdery cocoa texture to the tannins, that would be best mitigated with ribs. Lacks finesse, but certainly carries impact."

Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, Mar/2016

2013 -

"Wow, is this really from California? It tastes like Medoc Cabernet, super dry and chalky with deft balance and a mineral-like essence. Being from California (the North Coast, mind you), it's ripe but the attraction here is as much savoury mint and tobacco and smoky notes as the fruit."

Wine Enthusiast, Dec/2015

2013 -

Editor's Choice "This wine has a dark red color, bold, smoky, tobacco-like aromas, full body, generous blackberry and dark plum flavors, firm tannins and a dry impression overall. It seems to improve and show more depth with each sip. Drink now through 2018."
